Amy is an incredibly social whale that is almost always seen as part of a large bubble net feeding group or with long-term companion humpback whales. Amy is one of the most commonly observed whales in Gitga’at Territory, though we do not yet know where this social whale migrates. In 2011, there were no sightings of Amy in our study area. This was the first year we had not seen Amy return following the winter migration, and we were all quite concerned. In 2012, Amy was once again sighted within the large feeding group; to say we were relieved would be an understatement. We ourselves have become quite attached to this whale! Whatever the reason for the absence, we were thrilled and relieved to observe Amy once again in Caamano Sound, and we have seen Amy every year since.
